Summary

Fighting for a Future

Thorfinn and his crew are on their way to Greece, the first leg of their expedition to Vinland。 Having landed near Bergen, in Norway, Thorfinn is attacked by a bear, only to be saved by a fierce huntress named Hild。 While sharing a meal together, Hild recounts how her village and family were massacred many years ago—a story Thorfinn knows quite intimately。 Now, Thorfinn must face Hild and his own violent past in order to press forward。 As his journey progresses, Thorfinn encounters more factions that do not share his vision, and a war in the name of Vinland may be looming on the horizon。

After a more or less peaceful time Thorfinn is slowly being dragged back into a conflict seemingly too grand to be solved by one man's pacifism。How will our hero deal with the fact(?) that sometimes you need to shed blood to prevent bloodshed? Bringing up the past and fighting as a last resort keeps things more realistic。 All the plotting is still going on, which is kinda humorous。

From a war story, to a farm drama, to now an adventure romp with shades of Three Men and a Baby。 Vinland Saga is the best!

At the mercy of HildI can't say enough of how amazing this story has come along。 One of the things I look forward to in a manga series is how the characters interreact with one another and on his path toward redemption Thorfinn has found some interesting allies and villains alike making this world come to life with emotions as each deals with their own motivations through each of their unique personality。 In this volume we get a better understanding into why Hild despises Thorfinn and what she i At the mercy of HildI can't say enough of how amazing this story has come along。 One of the things I look forward to in a manga series is how the characters interreact with one another and on his path toward redemption Thorfinn has found some interesting allies and villains alike making this world come to life with emotions as each deals with their own motivations through each of their unique personality。 In this volume we get a better understanding into why Hild despises Thorfinn and what she is willing to do to finally see her revenge fulfilled。 Will this fierce huntress finally claim her trophy in the end or will the spirit of forgiveness claim her as it did Einar not long before。 We also get to see what happened to Sigurd and his men after they set out after Gudrid and the others before trouble finds Thorfinn once more。 By Thor's manly muscles。。。can this peace loving guy have some time without having to deal with something from his past。 :) 。。。more

This volume forces Thorfinn to face some of the horrific actions of his past, and introduces an interesting new member to the group。

It's credit to this series that even the mundane events in this are made thrilling or exciting as you wonder what is going to happen next to Thorfinn and his band。Even so, there are plenty of exciting moments and challenges to get through on their voyage and I remain totally under the control of the writer and artist, my interest never wavering and my desire to read more fuelling my chain-reading all of these books in less than a week。 It's credit to this series that even the mundane events in this are made thrilling or exciting as you wonder what is going to happen next to Thorfinn and his band。Even so, there are plenty of exciting moments and challenges to get through on their voyage and I remain totally under the control of the writer and artist, my interest never wavering and my desire to read more fuelling my chain-reading all of these books in less than a week。 。。。more

In the first half, Thorfinn is on the run from a female hunter whose father he killed years before he became a pacifist。 The second half finds most of the surviving cast of the series (Thorkell!! Yay!!) coincidentally coming together in Jelling just as a war of succession is brewing among the Jomsvikings。The book is just cruising along at a pretty consistently high level of quality。

Definitely not my favorite of the series。 We introduce a lot of new characters, we go through some flashback as well and in the end the main story didn't evolve much。 It was good don't get me wrong, just not as good as this series had me expect! But I'm still fully in and can't wait for the next one (one a bit lower at vol。 9, all containing two normal size volume, so that make 18, it's just normal to have a bit of a slower one!)。 Definitely not my favorite of the series。 We introduce a lot of new characters, we go through some flashback as well and in the end the main story didn't evolve much。 It was good don't get me wrong, just not as good as this series had me expect! This book deals with the introduction of Hild and the beginning of the war in the baltic。 While Hild is still a new character, she feels a bit one dimensional and a bit of a nuisance to the story。 Throughout this book she repeats herself and basically just has one interest - killing Thorfinn。 In addition the book adds in Garm - another very simple minded character with one goal - kill Thorfinn。 These two characters have really nice design, are unique looking, have unique weapons, and make for in This book deals with the introduction of Hild and the beginning of the war in the baltic。 While Hild is still a new character, she feels a bit one dimensional and a bit of a nuisance to the story。 Throughout this book she repeats herself and basically just has one interest - killing Thorfinn。 In addition the book adds in Garm - another very simple minded character with one goal - kill Thorfinn。 These two characters have really nice design, are unique looking, have unique weapons, and make for interesting enemies though。 So overall - not terrible changes, I just hope some dimensions are added to their characters and they get more going on。Hild's backstory is good, and helps flesh her out some。 The art continues to be excellent。 The story seems to be adding a lot more sort of shonen humor, and I'm not sure how I feel。 I think overall it tries to lighten up the story a bit, especially since there's not as much violence as before。 So in order to sort of compensate and give more variety to the tale they've thrown in some humor。 Some of it works, but I hope they keep it in check。 The War in the Baltic stuff is great and the political intrigue and plotting of that stuff is what makes this book great。 。。。more

I feel like we're finally back on a more interesting track。 Thorfinn along with Einar, Leif and a few other friends are on a quest to get backing to try to go to Vinland (North America), but there are many obstacles, lack of funding, runaway brides stowing away, savage pursuit, orphaned toddlers and Thorfinn's past coming back to haunt him。That last one is the one that interested me。 Enter Hild, a young woman with a scarred face。 She wasn't what women are wanted to be back 1090, she's intelligen I feel like we're finally back on a more interesting track。 Thorfinn along with Einar, Leif and a few other friends are on a quest to get backing to try to go to Vinland (North America), but there are many obstacles, lack of funding, runaway brides stowing away, savage pursuit, orphaned toddlers and Thorfinn's past coming back to haunt him。That last one is the one that interested me。 Enter Hild, a young woman with a scarred face。 She wasn't what women are wanted to be back 1090, she's intelligent, with great skills in engineering but it all comes to a tragic end and she's now a huntress。 Thorfinn's childhood was soaked in blood and he was complicit in many atrocities。 His desire to never lift another weapon now doesn't change that。 Hild wants him to pay for what he's done to her in the past。She is a complex character that I really enjoyed。 As if Hild isn't bad enough, Floki, Thorkell and the Jomsvikings have caught up with Thorfinn who is now embroiled in their politics and fighting when all he wants is to be left alone to be a merchant and not his father's heir among their violent numbers。 The art and history in this is fantastic。 Thorfinn is still an interesting compelling character。 I'm still along for the ride。 。。。more

Vinland continues to be an amazing adventure。 With the cliffhanger of the last volume the first part of this story deals with Hild and Thorfinn。 Will she kill him? Will she forgive him? What happened back then? You get the whole story and it's not very。。。happy。 Then we deal with the group getting chased down by a old foe (or maybe friend?) and some fighting happens that might just change everyone's life! The story moves at a nice pace still with plenty of great character development moments。 I'm Vinland continues to be an amazing adventure。 With the cliffhanger of the last volume the first part of this story deals with Hild and Thorfinn。 Will she kill him? In this volume the side-character from the end of the last takes center stage。 The backstory presented is interested and unique, as usual, and the main themes of redemption, forgiveness and turning over a new "Lief" are presented with renewed intensity。 The personal journey of the main character and his comrades takes on Shakespearean resonance as the author enlarges upon the meticulously crafted Medieval depiction of the world。 It's easy to forget that ancient clans were people to, as capable a In this volume the side-character from the end of the last takes center stage。 The backstory presented is interested and unique, as usual, and the main themes of redemption, forgiveness and turning over a new "Lief" are presented with renewed intensity。 The personal journey of the main character and his comrades takes on Shakespearean resonance as the author enlarges upon the meticulously crafted Medieval depiction of the world。 It's easy to forget that ancient clans were people to, as capable as, or more capable than, us in many cases, with dreams, loves and pain。 I was very absorbed by this quick-read tome, and can't wait to see where the story goes next。 I am torn between wanting to get to the story's conclusion and just enjoying the ride。 。。。more

Her vengeance shall not be denied! But, well, Thorfinn kind of has to survive or the story is over, so Hild’s vengeance is delayed。 But only for now!So it’s off to Denmark。 But there a new danger appears。 It is time to pick a new chieftain of the fierce Jomsvikings, greatest of the Viking raiders。 The wicked Floki’s grandson is one candidate, but he’s only ten and would no doubt be the puppet of his grandsire。 Much to Thorfinn’s horror, he too has been raised as a possible candidate。 Our protagonist has no interest in going back to a violent lifestyle, but Floki may not give him a choice。This series continues to be great stuff。 The art is excellent, and the action intense。 As well, the characters are layered。 We see the inner conflict between Hild’s Norse custom of familial vengeance, and her Christian father’s belief in forgiveness。There are also bits of humor, such as mighty Thorkell’s near-death from too much peace, and Gudrid’s erstwhile husband trying not to be recognized when she might see him in reduced circumstances。Thorfinn’s quest to atone for his violent ways gains resonance with the new constant reminder of the human cost of his (ultimately futile) quest for vengeance。There is, of course, quite a bit of bloody violence in this volume, and in Hild’s flashback it is heavily implied that Askeladd’s mercenaries would have raped her had she been caught。This series continues to impress and is highly recommended。 。。。more

This series continues to be excellent, though it certainly throws every possible obstacle on Thorfinn's way。 And Thorfinn tries to reason with everybody but nobody understands his reluctance to violence (especially those who knew him before) and that brings conflict。 That's a bit repetitive cycle, which I didn't give this one 5 stars。 That Karli, why couldn't they leave that kid behind, ugh。 Hild is welcome addition though, she's driven by vengeance but I suspect she'll come to think on that in This series continues to be excellent, though it certainly throws every possible obstacle on Thorfinn's way。 And Thorfinn tries to reason with everybody but nobody understands his reluctance to violence (especially those who knew him before) and that brings conflict。 That's a bit repetitive cycle, which I didn't give this one 5 stars。 That Karli, why couldn't they leave that kid behind, ugh。 Hild is welcome addition though, she's driven by vengeance but I suspect she'll come to think on that in the future。 。。。more

Volume Nine of the Vinland Saga was excellent。 The action really picks up as we find out more about Hild and Thorfinn's past。 This volume really goes into the past of Hild, how she was trained and how she ended up in her situation and how Thorfinn factors into all of it。 Hild also goes through with her plan to try to kill Thorfinn, but ends up allowing him to live while he finishes the Vinland quest。Meanwhile- Thorkell is bored and wants to go to war。 It turns out he decides to contest Floki for Volume Nine of the Vinland Saga was excellent。 The action really picks up as we find out more about Hild and Thorfinn's past。 This volume really goes into the past of Hild, how she was trained and how she ended up in her situation and how Thorfinn factors into all of it。 Hild also goes through with her plan to try to kill Thorfinn, but ends up allowing him to live while he finishes the Vinland quest。Meanwhile- Thorkell is bored and wants to go to war。 It turns out he decides to contest Floki for the leadership of the Jomsvikings。 Once Thorkell realizes Thorfinn is alive, he decides to try to recruit him for his warband。 We also learn about Floki's treacherous actions against Thors, Thorfinn's father and former Jomsviking。 This really sheds some light on why Floki is sending men to kill Thorfinn。Eventually Thorkell and Thorfinn meet with Floki。 Floki wishes his grandson to become the leader of the Jomsvikings, while Thorkell puts forth Thorfinn as a potential successor。 It doesn't seem like Thorfinn will be heading towards Vinland anytime soon。 Excellent story and art。 This volume was noticeably darker than the last volume。 But there are many serious issues going on-so that is to be expected。 Like vikings? violence?
